I had high expectations for STALKER. I’d read the reviews of a dark, brooding FPS/RPG set in a nuclear waste-ridden Russia featuring an interesting storyline and various factions to deal with. However, STALKER doesn’t live up to the hype, especially when compared with other great FPS/RPGs like Oblivion and Fallout 3. Also, the game map is small. I’d estimate one-fifth the size of Oblivion or Fallout which cramps exploration. There are no towns to explore with NPCs to get to know. Just a few buildings, some that are abandoned, few camps and a ship converted into the only “town,” like Rivet City in FO3 except smaller.

To say the graphics are aging is an understatement. Even with all the video options set to high (I’m running an Intel i7 quad-core, 3 gigs OCZ DDR3 RAM, 1T Seagate Barracuda HD) the game seems circa 2003 at best. Landscapes are blocky, polygons are clearly visible and NPCs sort of glide-step across the terrain (ala Morrowind, which is much older). The conversation system is backwards, i.e. dialog with NPCs is text-based, but when they’re talking among themselves it’s all in Russian, or something that sounds like Russian. So any information that could be gleamed by eavesdropping is useless. Sure, they will occasionally speak in English when you approach an NPC, but then it’s only mundane stuff like, “Hey, bro” (wouldn’t a Russian say “comrade”?) or “Put your weapon away.”

I really tried to get into the storyline, but was so bored by the limpid side quests, poor graphics and ancient dialog system that I lost interest. This one’s going into my for sale bin.

I don’t know how many people have heard of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, but Shadow of Chernobyl was fantastic. Clear Sky was also fantastic but kind of meh in comparisson to SOC, but Call of Pripyat is by far the best one, hands down. If you have played SOC or CS, give this game a shot. If you like games like Fallout 3, give this game a shot. If you like to play video games, give this game a shot.

First off the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is my all time favorite pc game. I absolutely loved shadow of Chernobyl and feel it was the best of the series and clear sky was almost as good as shadow of Chernobyl in my opinion. I was so excited when I saw that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. cop. had come out that I put the other games I was playing on the shelf for a while (Dragon age/killing floor). But the excitement soon waned as I found the game play of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. cop some what disappointing. Yes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. cop still has that odd Russian wonderful eeriness that in my opinion makes the game so worth playing even with all of its other issues. I could go on and on about the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series but I have decided to just air some complaints in regard to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. cop.

    WARNING: possible spoilers to follow.

1: The first thing I noticed is the gun sounds are some of the worst of any game I have ever played. They sound like little cap guns. This is so bad that I even found a mod that was supposed to improve the sounds. (and I don’t usually waste time modding games) Well, even with the mod the guns still sound like cap guns and the mod also changed the thunder sounds. Why?… I don’t know (that was just lame and if I had known that I wouldn’t have used the mod.).

2:The guns are pathetic.(so are the grenades) You get 3 levels of up grades from the mechanics and you can’t get the 3rd level upgrades till almost the end of the game. I’m probably a couple hours from the end of the game (still haven’t found the tools needed for level 3 upgrading) and I have all the level 2 upgrades, and $200,000.00 in cash, (and probably another $200,000.00 in stash) and nothing to spend it on. And just to let you know, a level 2 assault rifle can still take up to 50 shots to kill a standard mutant or wild dog.(ammo for the more powerful guns is so scarce that those guns don’t even come into play)

3:Largely the game becomes a tiresome giant and pointless Easter egg hunt. But the atmosphere makes it still enjoyable.

4: The suits are a mixed bag with some providing good armor and no ability to use artifact containers and others that provide fair chemical and rad protection but poor protection from weapons (at least at level 2, but what is the point ? The game is almost over.)

5: And now one of my all time favorites with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. The constant and ever present game stutter. I learned from the first 2 that there is no point in even trying to fix it. All 3 have the worst stutter of any game I have ever played.

6:The stealth aspect of the first 2 games was excellent but there is no stealth aspect to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. cop and the game largely becomes a save and reload fest. And the load times can be excessive despite what others are claiming.

7:And the last complaint that I’m going to list is a blanket complaint as to the overall lame and pointless feel of the game. Like talking to characters over and over with the same meaningless dialogue. (most nauseating over repeated phrase “go talk to the big bad boss.”)

Just as a side note the game difficulty is not a factor in my opinion of this game as I have always liked how difficult the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series has been and I always found it odd how much people complained about it.

As with all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games it is the eerie atmosphere that make them so special. No other game in my opinion does this so well.

Go ahead and bash my review if you feel the need for my not loving this game like everyone else but I can tell you right now I have been a dedicated fan of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. since the beginning when most people never even heard of or new the game existed. This game in the series although still very good, is just kind of a let down.

update added later: finished game …..never did find level 3 upgrade tools.

update added even later: It really is to bad the level 3 upgrades didn’t play more into the game. I chose the free roaming option at the end of the game and finally found the tools to upgrade to level 3 equiptment and weapons, and I think I’m having more fun in the free roam section of the game with the weapons and armor with level 3 upgrades as the game seems much more balanced and realistic. All in all another great S.T.A.L.K.E.R. experience. My thanks go out to all involved in bringing us the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.
